How Far Can Waves Reach: On many beaches there are lines of litter left by the waves. Above those lines is a high water line, and then scattered bull kelp fronds and holdfasts above them, partly covered by drifting sand. Often behind the foredunes there will be pieces of driftwood. And every now and then a large log, silvery and polished by the sea, is found, partly buried in sand, in the middle dunes. That is how far the sea can reach.
Mortality Statistics: According to the Harbor Patrol Office, as of 2-9-09 there have been 75 beach and boating related deaths since 1963.
Off The Road Vehicles: Oceano Dunes Off The Road Vehicle Park is frequented by up to 50,000 people a day on busy weekends. Several people die there in accidents each year.
Mountain Biking: Off road cycling is another big sport, and bike shops sell equipment to take the sport to new levels: helmets (the minimal protection); leg guards; arm guards; and fancy bikes. Some of the injuries are horrendous, but I haven’t heard of any deaths locally.
Miscellany: One experienced hang glider was observed to fly into a cloud and disappear.
